Description
Not far from Notre Dame on the Île de la Cité in Paris sits one of the most beautiful churches in all of France: Sainte Chapelle, a Royal Chapel in the Gothic style situated within the Medieval Palais de la Cité, the residence of the Kings of France until the 14th century. Sainte Chapelle is home to one of the most extensive 13th-century stained glass collections anywhere in the world with 6458 square feet of stained glass windows in the upper chapel alone. Commissioned by King Louis IXs in the 13th Century to house his collection of religious artifacts acquired in Constantinople including the Crown of Thorns, the Holy Shroud, the Holy Cross, and other holy relics of the Crucifixion of Christ, Sainte Chapelle is considered among the highest achievements of the Rayonnant period of Gothic architecture.
